got to the Rhinebeck Antiques Show about 10:00AM and it was the jewel of the whole
pre-con trip. I would say
for it's size it was the best antiques show I've been to in twenty two
years collecting.....
The
2009 30th National Sports Collectors Convention took place at the IX
Center in Cleveland
Ohio July 29th thru August 2nd. I flew out from San Francisco a week early to
do some exploring around the east coast. Basically the plan was to land
in Cleveland, rent a car, head east, and see as many antiques venues in
a week as I could before the national started.
Based
on my time frame I could only find two antiques shows within my
perimeter. Something called the Great American Antique Fest in Liverpool
New York, near Syracuse , and
the Rhinebeck Antiques Fair in Rhinebeck New York. The plan was to see
these two shows, and visit and shoot my friend Bob Mayer's collection,
also there in upstate New York. Then finish with a visit to the
antiques hot bed, or what used to be the antiques hot bed of the United
States, Adamstown/Denver PA. Then head back to Cleveland for the
National. In other words, as much pain as I could take. All that
driving might sound harsh to some, but to me it was kind of the ultimate
vacation. Just driving around seeing things and areas of the United
States I've never seen before is very enjoyable to me,
My
plane landed Wednesday evening July 22nd, exactly one week before the
National opened. The Antiques Fest in Syracuse wasn't until Friday, so I
planned a day of exploring on Thursday. The Ontario Antiques Mall in
Farmington New York advertises it's self as the largest Antiques mall in
New York state. Coming from Cleveland Farmington is about an hour before
Syracuse. So I got off the plane and headed right for Farmington. I got
to my hotel about 4:00AM and slept till 10, got up and went to the
Ontario Mall. How was it?...well, not bad. I didn't find anything great
in sports that I had to have...but I did find a 47" wide carved
eagle I really pondered...it was only $750.00 plus 20% off, which would
have made it $600.00. I just didn't want to deal with packing and
shipping it home. Had I thought of it, Marc Mcrea drove to the National
and would have taken it back to the Bay Area for me, but I didn't think
of it and left without it...it was killer!
After I finished the mall
I had the rest of the day to explore around the Farmington area before
heading on to Syracuse/Liverpool. Farmington is about 7 1/2 miles to Canandaigua
N.Y., so I headed over there to look for antiques stores. There were
only a few so from there on I pretty much suspended the search for antiques for the day.
I spent the rest of the afternoon just driving around sightseeing. Nothing too exciting,
just seeing new areas. I drove thru the Village of Bloomfield, then thru
Victor before getting back on Interstate 90 for Syracuse.
